Medicine Review for Dentists

About this Seminar

This course will review common medical conditions and diseases clinicians may see in routine practice and how these conditions and diseases may impact or modify care for these patients. There will be both a didactic and case based interactive session for participants.

About Dr. Trang Nguyen

BMSc, DDS, MSc, FRCD(C), Diplomate ABPD

Dr. Trang Nguyen is the Chief of Pediatric Dentistry at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre. She obtained her degree in Dentistry from the University of Alberta, completed her Master of Science in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Toronto, and spent an additional two years training at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario. She is an assistant professor at Memorial University and the University of Toronto. She is the chair of the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Scientific Committee, past-president of the Canadian Pediatric Society Oral Health Committee, member of the NLDA Public Awareness Committee, and an examiner for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, National Dental Examining Board of Canada and the American Board of Pediatric Dentist.

About Dr. Marc Horton

Dr. Marc Horton is a staff dentist at Eastern Health at the Janeway Dental Clinic. He obtained his dental degree from the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Following dental school, he completed two years of general practice residency at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry, and the Veterans Affairs of Greater Los Angeles. He then completed a two-year pediatrics residency at the University of Washington and obtained a certificate in pediatric dentistry and a Master of Science in Dentistry. Before joining Eastern Health, he worked in private practice in northwest Washington State for three years.

About Dr. Tricia O'Brien

Dr. Tricia O’Brien was born and raised here in Newfoundland. In 2009 she completed her Bachelor of Science at Memorial University with a Major in Biology and Minor in Psychology. She then went on to earn her Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree at Dalhousie University in 2014. Dr. O’Brien moved home to fulfill a three-year Newfoundland and Labrador Rural Bursary Program by working part-time in Twillingate, and the remainder of her time in Gander. After four years of practice in Central, Dr. O’Brien decided to relocate with her family to St. John’s and accepted a position in private practice with Cowan Heights Dental Centre. In addition to private practice, Dr. O’Brien has been working for the past year in the Adult Special Care/Oral Oncology Clinic at Janeway Dental. For the past two years, she has been enrolled in the local Spear Education Study Club, and she also enjoys volunteering with the Dental Health Awareness committee.
