Pearls of Wisdom (Teeth)

About this Seminar

Wisdom teeth are third molars that commonly get a bad reputation, and are often disliked, by dentists and patients themselves. Wisdom teeth are routinely impacted, and can be a source of pain/discomfort, or sometimes are associated with pathology. Learn to distinguish the types of third molar impactions, which types are most likely to cause issues for patients, when to extract versus when to refer, expected postoperative sequelae, as well as the risks of wisdom tooth extraction, and how to treat postoperative complications in your office. Also, learn about other impacted teeth, as well as about some of the most common pathology associated with impacted teeth.

Rebecca Woodford

About Rebecca Woodford

Dr. Rebecca Woodford was born in Gander, grew up in Mount Pearl, and currently lives in St. John’s. Her approach to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is inclusive of her experience as a trained surgeon and her experience as a patient. As an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, she is passionate about her patients: Dr. Woodford is able to provide optimal treatment outcomes and strives to make every patient feel safe, comfortable, and informed through her dedicated focus on patient care. As someone who has personally undergone orthognathic surgery herself, she understands the life-changing transformation that oral and maxillofacial surgery can bring and aims to make a positive difference in each patient that she treats. Dr. Woodford always knew she wanted to be a dentist, and left the province to pursue her studies and received her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from Dalhousie University, where she received the PEI Dental Association Prize for greatest proficiency and interest in Hospital Dentistry. During her time at dental school, she also provided dental surgical care in Tanzania, Africa. After graduating from dental school, she went on to complete a year as a General Practice Resident within the teaching hospitals of the University of Western Ontario and London Health Sciences Centre. She received her degrees of Medical Doctor (MD) and Masters in Science (MSc) in Oral Pathology during an intensive six-year Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery training program at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Woodford decided that a Medical Doctorate was necessary because she feels that oral and maxillofacial surgery is a combination of medicine, dentistry, and surgery and she wants to feel confident in every area of her practice to provide the best possible outcome for her patients. Dr. Woodford currently works at Atlantic Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Centre alongside Drs. Shannon Davis (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon), Nick Ledderhof (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon), Dr. Firoozeh Samim (Oral Medicine Oral Pathologist) and Dr. Catherine Nolet-Levesque (Oral & Maxillofacial Radiologist). Dr. Woodford has presented at various conferences, inclusive, but not exclusive, of the Newfoundland and Labrador Oral Health Convention, the Ontario Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (OSOMS), the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (CAOMS), and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS). She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Discipline of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN). She loves to educate the newest generation of students and has also provided lectures for emergency medicine residents and medicine students. Now that Dr. Woodford is back in her home province, she enjoys spending time with her family, especially her husband, her two boys (who are 6 months old and 3 years old) and her dog. She enjoys staying active, attending music concerts, and traveling (although these days, that has certainly changed).
